How to Get Rid of Dandruff: A Step-by-Step Guide

Dandruff is a common scalp condition, and while it can be stubborn, there are several effective ways to manage and reduce it. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Use the Right Shampoo

Look for shampoos with active ingredients that target the cause of dandruff (usually a yeast called Malassezia). Rotate between these if one stops working:

  • Zinc pyrithione – Antibacterial and antifungal (e.g., Head & Shoulders)
  • Ketoconazole – Strong antifungal (e.g., Nizoral)
  • Selenium sulfide – Slows skin cell turnover (e.g., Selsun Blue)
  • Salicylic acid – Helps remove flakes (e.g., Neutrogena T/Sal)
  • Coal tar – Slows shedding of dead skin (e.g., Neutrogena T/Gel)

2. Shampoo Correctly

  • Wash your hair frequently – even daily if needed – to reduce oil buildup.
  • Leave the medicated shampoo on your scalp for 5–10 minutes before rinsing to let the ingredients work.
  • Once dandruff improves, you can reduce to 2–3 times a week.

3. Avoid Triggers

  • Don’t scratch – Scratching can damage the scalp and worsen the condition.
  • Reduce stress – Stress can trigger or worsen dandruff.
  • Watch your diet – Some people find that excessive sugar, dairy, or yeast-heavy foods may contribute.

4. Try Natural Remedies (as supportive care)

  • Tea tree oil – A few drops added to your shampoo; has antifungal properties.
  • Apple cider vinegar – Dilute with water (1:1) and rinse after shampooing; helps balance scalp pH.
  • Aloe vera – Soothes inflammation.

5. Know When to See a Doctor

See a dermatologist if:

  • You’ve tried medicated shampoos for several weeks with no improvement.
  • Your scalp is very red, swollen, or painful.
  • You’re losing hair or have thick, stubborn plaques (could be psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis needing prescription treatment).

If you’re not sure which product to start with, zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole shampoos are often good first choices.
